Our Services for Children
UCP of NEPA’s commitment to children began in 1965 with early intervention services in Lackawanna County. As the need for support grew, dedicated Children’s Centers were established in the early 1980s, including a new facility in Wayne County and the renovation of the former Baptist Church in Clarks Summit for the Lackawanna County program. As services expanded, so did opportunities for children and families. In the mid-1980s, UCP of NEPA launched an inclusive child care program for children with and without disabilities and partnered with the ARC to create Pennsylvania’s first Lekotek program, encouraging learning and play through interaction with peers and siblings. Over time, the Children’s Center evolved into a fully integrated environment where children learned and grew together regardless of disability. During the 1990s, early intervention shifted to a family-centered approach, bringing services into children’s natural environments—whether at home, in child care, preschool, or the community. In 1998, Compuplay was added to complement the Lekotek program, using computer-based activities to support learning and development through play. Today, UCP of NEPA continues to build on the belief that every child deserves the best possible start. We provide specialized services for children with developmental delays or disabilities, meeting them where they are and partnering with families to help every child reach their full potential. Our Lekotek and Compuplay programs continue to offer engaging opportunities for children to learn, play, and thrive.
